Though photography was invented prior to the Mexican War, the Civil War was the first American war where a great number of solders and sailors of all ranks could send home a reproduction of themslves in uniform. Using a camera with a treated wet glass plate as a negative which was exposed by sunlight, their image was captured in up to sixty seconds. Many civilian photographs, such as Mathew B. Brady, Andrew Russell and Alexander Gardner photographed the men and women, battlefields and destruction during the war. An interesting grouping an be arranged on a wooden base with the camera, photographer and any standing I/R figure.
