1st Regiment, Polish Lancers
This elite regiment of light horse of the Imperial Guard was first raised in 1807 of Polish volunteers. After fighting at the battle of Wagram, July 5-6, 1809, troopers of the Polish Light Horse picked up the abandoned lances of their enemies and became lancers as well as light cavalry. The regiment fought in Spain, Europe, and Russia. Some served on Elba with Napoleon in exile, and returned to fight at Ligny and Waterloo.
